"Broken-Mountain Temple" is in the north of Changshu City, Jiangsu Province. Now it is called "Blessed Temple". It began to be built in Southern Qi Dynasty during the period of Northern and Southern Dynasties, so by the time of the Tang Dynasty it was already an ancient temple.
In the early morning I entered this ancient temple, the bright sun was shining on the high forest. There was a narrow path through the bamboo grove leading to a deep and serene place, and a meditation room was veiled in the lush leaves and flowers. The green mountains were glowing in their brilliance and the birds were rejoicing. All of these were reflected clearly in the pools of water, which brought peace to a person. Here, the world and everything were as if stilled, only leaving the melodious sound of the temple bells.
This poem uses the silence at an ancient temple in the early morning and its quiet, secluded atmosphere, to express the poet's yearning for being a recluse.
