春秋时期，晋灵公作为国王，动用了很多的百姓和钱财，建设一座九层的高台，以供自己玩乐。他害怕大臣们反对，就先下令不准任何人来规劝。荀息知道后，就去见晋灵公。灵公非常厌烦，就让人准备弓箭，只要他开口规劝，就射死他。
In the Spring and Autumn period, emperor Ling of the state of Jin built a nine-floor dais for enjoyment with a lot of people's money. He was afraid of ministers' objection, so he ordered in advance that nobody should admonish him. When Xun Xi knew it, he went to see emperor Ling. But the emperor annoyed very much and ordered bow and arrow to shoot him as long as he admonish him.
荀息进来，灵公把箭搭在弦上，对对他说："你是来劝我放弃建高台的吧？你看见这支箭了。只要你说，我就立刻射死你。"荀息却说："大王，不是这件事。我刚学到了一种很有意思的小技艺，特地来表演给大王看。"晋灵公听后就放下了弓箭，要他表演。荀息认真地把十二颗棋子堆起来，然后再把鸡蛋一个一个地加上去。大家都很紧张，灵公情不自禁地说："危险！太危险了！"荀息说："您别着急，还有比这更危险的事情呢。"灵公问："是什么？"荀息回答说："您建高台花那么多钱，百姓不能耕种。邻国将要来侵略我们，晋国就要灭亡了！"晋灵公这才醒悟，下令停止建高台。
When Xun Xi came in, the emperor put an arrow on the string and aimed at him, "Do you come to persuade me to give up the building of the dais? You have seen this arrow. I'll shoot you as long as you open your mouth". But Xun Xi said, "No, Your Highness. I came to show you an interesting trick that I just learned". Emperor Ling put down the bow and asked him to give performance. Xun Xi carefully piled twelve chess pieces and then put eggs one after another. Everyone was very nervous. Emperor Ling cannot keep from saying, "It's very dangerous!"Xun Xi said, "Take it easy! There is one thing more dangerous". Emperor Ling asked what it was. Xun Xi answered, "You spent so much money on the dais. People cannot work on the farm. Our country will be destroyed if the neighboring country invades". Emperor came to realize his error and hastened to order to stop the building.
