James Murdoch has left the boards of operating companies overseeing News Corp.'s U.K. newspapers the Sun, the Times and the Sunday Times, according to British regulatory filings, which registered the changes in September.
Mr. Murdoch, News Corp.'s
deputy chief operating officer, resigned from the boards of a number of subsidiary companies of News International, the media conglomerate's U.K. newspaper unit. But he remains the News International chairman and a
director of the
holding company for the Times and the Sunday Times.
News Corp. appointed Mr. Murdoch
deputy chief operating officer in March, a job change that will see him move to New York from London but
retain oversight over the company's operations in Europe and Asia. News Corp. tapped Tom Mockridge in July to become chief
executive of News International, after Rebekah Brooks resigned as head of the unit, in the midst of a
scandal over voicemail interception at News Corp.'s now-closed News of the World tabloid.
News Corp. owns The Wall Street Journal.
Mr. Murdoch has faced scrutiny from lawmakers in the U.K. over his handling of that scandal, which has led to the News of the World's closure and three ongoing
criminal investigations into the tabloid's behavior.
'I behaved
reasonably given the information I had,' Mr. Murdoch said in a
testimony to U.K. lawmakers earlier this month.
A
spokesman for News International called the changes a tidying up operation
related to Mr. Murdoch's move to New York and Mr. Mockridge's appointment as chief
executive of News International. Mr. Mockridge is
responsible for the day-to-day operations of the British newspapers; he reports to Mr. Murdoch, who has continued to oversee the U.K. newspaper unit as chairman. Mr. Mockridge has joined the boards Mr. Murdoch has left.
