The president of the International Olympic Committee said the organization was reviewing the route of the Beijing Olympic torch relay - but would not cancel any legs of its journey around the world because of anti-Chinese protests.
'There is no discussion about canceling any leg,' said president Jacques Rogge in an interview with The Wall Street Journal
amidst a meeting in Beijing with representatives of national Olympic committees.
Earlier reports claiming that the IOC might cancel a leg 'were based on misunderstanding,' he said. 'What we will do, as we should do, is study the torch relay so far.'
The torch was met by violent protests in London and Paris in recent days, and is headed to San Francisco on April 9. Organizers have already announced changes to the original path of the relay in San Francisco because of security concerns.
'I am saddened that such a beautiful
symbol as the torch that unites people...actually has been attacked,' said Rogge. 'We respect fully the freedom of speech and press, but we expect people to be non-violent,' he said. -By Geoffrey A. Fowler and Mei Fong, The Wall Street Journal; 852-2831-6438
