LOS ANGELES, Dec. 26 (Xinhua) -- Police said Friday that thieves used a pickup truck to force open a large roll-up door of a warehouse store in California and yank away an ATM machine.
The theft occurred at a Costco store in Carlsbad, more than 100km south of Los Angeles, before police were called to the scene around 3:40 a.m. by a security company, according to Carlsbad police officer Matt Magro.
Store managers told police that a vehicle was driven into the roll-up door near the store entrance and the ATM machine with an undetermined amount of cash was missing.
Four thieves in black hooded sweatshirts used an early 1990s white Chevrolet pickup to force open the door, and left behind a portion of the truck's bumper in the process, Magro said.
Reports of thefts, robberies and other crimes have been on the rise in recent months in many U.S. cities as the economic recession was deteriorating across the country with unemployment rates at multi-year record high.
