BEIJING, Jan. 4 (Xinhua) -- A magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck off the northern coast of the island of Papua in Indonesia, the China Earthquake Administration reported on Sunday.

It said the quake occurred at 3:43 a.m. Beijing Time Sunday, hitting the area 0.7 degrees south latitude and 132.8 degrees east longitude at a depth of around 33 km.
