General Motors Co. plans to jointly develop more
advanced powertrain technologies with its Chinese
partner SAIC Motor Corp. for the global market, a GM
executive said Wednesday.

In an
interview, Daniel Hancock, GM's vice president of global strategic product alliances, said the two companies will co-develop small high-technology engines and
automatic gearbox.

Mr. Hancock said the new engines and gearbox technologies will likely provide 'up to 20%' gains in fuel
economy and the new components will be deployed 'in a few years.'

GM and SAIC on Wednesday said they signed an
agreement for joint development of powertrains, small displacement engines and transmissions.
