What does one do when being chairman of Goldman Sachs for Greater China no longer holds the old thrill? Help manage the world's biggest foreign-exchange reserves? Set up the country's largest private-equity fund?

Write a book?

Speculation has been rife around what Fred Hu, until recently Greater China chairman for Goldman Sachs Group Inc., plans to do now that he's stepped down from that role.

Soon after he left in April local media reported that he was being tapped for a role in the foreign-exchange division of the People's Bank of China.

More recently, the China Daily reported on May 21 that Hu was in the process of setting up a $10 billion China-focused private-equity fund.

On Friday, Hu finally broke his silence. 'I'm writing a book...on the financialcrisis in China,' he said on the sidelines of a private-equity forum in Beijing. Hu declined to comment on whether he was setting up a fund, saying he's 'exploring all options.'

There's little doubt that Hu, who has studied and worked both in China and the U.S., will bring a uniqueperspective to a topic that has already had gallons of ink spilt over it in the West. And he brings an impressive pedigree.

Hu, who has a master's degree in engineering science from Tsinghua University and a master's and doctorate in economics from Harvard University, joined Goldman Sachs as chief economist for Greater China in 1997 and later became general manager, then co-head of investmentbanking in China. He was Henry Paulson's point man in China during the former U.S. Treasury secretary's time as CEO at Goldman Sachs, and is close to former Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji. He was named chairman of Greater China in 2008.

Also, it wouldn't be his first book. In 2003, he co-authored with Jonathan Anderson 'The Five Great Myths About China And The World,' which according to its Amazon link 'was originally published as a series of research reports for Goldman Sachs clients and examines the five big myths about China's role in the world economy.'

So, not surprisingly, he already has a publisher lined up. But for those thinking of ordering an advance copy, just a heads up: He's writing it in Chinese.

Hu, who had been with Goldman Sachs's China operations for 13 years, maintains an advisory role with the investment bank.
