No post-holiday blues here. A year's early months are typically a slow period for
consumer electronics. But not for Apple Inc., which will likely ride
buoyant demand for its
hardware to rack up yet another strong quarter when it releases
earnings Tuesday.
Though the most-recent period doesn't include sales from Apple's ballyhooed iPad -- which launched in early April -- the company's business in iPhones, iPods and Macintosh computers is plenty rosy.
Analysts on average expect
earnings for the company's
fiscal second quarter to rise 37%, compared with
earnings a year ago adjusted for an accounting change, to $2.45 a share, according to Thomson Reuters. That is higher than Apple's own
forecast range of $2.06 to $2.18. Quarterly revenues are expected to jump 33% to $12.1 billion.
For that, Apple can thank expanding
international sales of its iPhone, which are growing at a strong clip, in markets like China and South Korea. The company also recently added new
carrier partners in Europe. Apple already has sold more than 50 million iPhones so far world-wide, Chief Executive Steve Jobs said earlier this month.
In the first quarter, analysts believe the company nearly doubled iPhone sales from a year earlier to 7 million to 7.5 million units.
Another bright spot: Although the iPod business overall has been declining, Apple is getting more money from each sale as
consumers upgrade their
portable music players to more-expensive iPod touches.
Still, it is hard to see those results
lighting a fire under Apple's stock, which has nearly doubled in the past year. Investors, accustomed to upbeat results from the tech giant, are likely to want strong
guidance, particularly on sales of the iPad to justify the shares' current
valuation of 17.7 times expected
earnings for the
fiscal year
ending in September 2011.
'It's really the products rolling out over the next couple quarters that really matter,' said Robert Cihra, an analyst for Caris & Co.
Apple typically likes to set
conservativeforecasts, but analysts already are looking for June quarter
earnings of $2.69 a share on iPad and iPhone sales, according to Thomson Reuters, up from an adjusted $2.01 a year earlier.
That is the problem with making
revolutionary products. Investors keep
wanting more of them.
