China will soon begin building a high-speed railway linking Beijing with the commercial hub Shanghai. Railway Minister Liu Zhijun did not give a
specific date for the start of construction while
speaking to a national conference over the weekend.
The project, in planning for a
decade, was due to begin last year for operation in 2010. The cost of the project is estimated to have risen to 170
billion yuan, because of the rising costs of real estate and resettlement. The project was
originally estimated at 130
billion yuan.
The railway line, with a planned top speed of 350 kilometers per hour, will reduce travel time between the two cities to less than five hours from the current 13 hours.
