Heavy rain continues to drench China's southern Guangdong Province, swamping fields and washing out roads.
Due to rainstorms, the water level in the Guangzhou section of the Pearl River exceeded the warning line by half a meter on Wednesday.
Experts say the situation may worsen as an "astronomical tide" along with torrential rains are likely to hit the area in coming days.
Huang Zhenwei, Section Chief of Guangdong Province Flood Control Headquarters said "The water level in the Guangzhou section of the Pearl River has been above the warning line since Tuesday. The river may overflow, and water-logging may occur in some streets if potential 'astronomical tide' and rainstorms hit the region together. The city's drainage system may be affected."
Days of torrential rains have lashed the Pearl River Delta Region, leaving roads submerged. The downpours have also left accumulated water in other parts of cities in Guangdong Province.
Zhuang Jiamiao, Deputy Director of Guangdong Province Flood Control Headquarters said "There haven't been any major disasters during the heavy rainstorms due to our preparation. The bad weather only caused water-logging in parts of some cities and triggered landslides. "
Meanwhile, weather forecasts say strong rainstorms are likely to hit parts of eastern and southern China over the next 10 days.
The State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters has launched a Level-Four emergencyresponse plan to deal with the coming challenge.
The headquarters urges local authorities to keep a close watch for possible floods and stay vigilant regarding water levels in dams and reservoirs. And do everything they can to prevent any potentialgeological disaster.
