BUSINESSMAN Lai Jintu from Fujian Province has found his own way of donating money to those affected by the May 12 quake in Sichuan. Instead of giving money to charities he took 280,000 yuan in cash to areas ravaged by the earthquake, personally seeking out people in need and handing over the money himself. Lai's story has been widely reported, and it has been speculated that Lai's act was done out of a distrust for charities. Over 40 billion yuan in donations have been collected so far and Lai's actions have brought about calls for greater transparency in charities. The Civil Affairs Ministry has said last week that they will draft monthly audits for all donated funds.
