(CCTV 06-22-2008 12:19)There has been a let-up in torrential rains in South China over the past two days. But experts warn against any ease in vigilance relating to flood prevention. The South China rain belt is moving northwards and is headed for the region between the Yellow River and the Huai River.
Weather experts say China has experienced two rain belts this year. One was in South China, and the other lies in the region between the Yellow River and the Huai River.
Four rounds of heavy rainfall have pounded South China since the end of May. The Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, Guangdong Province and ten other provinces have suffered from the torrential rains. The intensity of the rainfall in some areas has been rarely seen in the past century. Flooding has also occurred along the Pearl River.
It's predicted that next month there will be more rain along the middle and lower reaches of the Yellow River. And also in the region between the Yellow River and the Huai River.
Xu Xiaofeng, Deputy Director of China Meteorological Administration said "The rainfall in this area has yet to come. But it needs our great attention. That's because our flood prevention capability is weaker in northern China. Rains there are likely to bring about more severe disasters once flooding occurs."
Experts also point out that weather formation in southwestern China requires special attention. That's because rain belts can easily form in North China during the summer -- heading in a northeast-to-southwest direction.
Xu Xiaofeng said "During this year's flooding season, there is another rainy zone. It's located in the southwestern region, including quake-ravaged Sichuan Province. We are keeping a close watch on the weather activities there."
Thousands of tents have been set up in quake-hit areas. But no thunder-proof devices have been installed in temporary shelters. So experts have printed thousands of pamphlets to give quake victims safety tips on protecting themselves during thunder and lightning storms. And also explaining how to deal with rising temperatures and humidity.
