THE "Two Sessions" (CPPCC and NPC) in Beijing have attracted much media coverage for their distinguished attendees. These come from all walks of life, and have achieved success in their professions. You may find the following expressions useful when describing this group of people.

top-dog: 骨干,主要人物

A person or organization that has the highest authority or power in a group.

Although Jane was very shy at the beginning, she became the top dog in her office within the first year. (虽然珍妮开始非常害羞,但工作一年她就成了办公室的骨干。)

big-shot: 大人物

An informal way to say "an influential or important person"

His father is a big-shot in the entertainment industry. (他爸爸是娱乐界的大人物。)

mogul: 文坛、企业界或政界的显要人物

Lu Xun is a literary mogul in China. (鲁迅是中国文坛大家。)

tycoon / magnate: 企业界的大亨、巨头

A wealthy and powerful businessperson or industrialist.

Bill Gates, the IT industry tycoon, is now the third most wealthy person in the world. (IT界巨头比尔盖茨现在世界富人榜排名第三。)

big-wig: 官职很高的人,权贵,多用于政界

An informal word, referring to an important person, especially an official

somebody: 重要人物

An informal word, usually used in a joking tone

He walks and talks like he's somebody. But all of us know he's nobody, just an ordinary office worker. (他言行举止好像自己是个什么人物。但我们都知道他什么都不是,一个普通的文员而已。)
