Ⅵ Eight Skills
Apart from the above-mentioned qualifications and requirements for being a top Guide, the Guide, either a national Guide or a local Guide, is encouraged to possess the following eight skills if he or she wants to do an excellent job.
1.Superior Language Ability
The Guide should try his or her best to improve his or her
mastery of the English language, for his or her work is to contact the English-speaking foreign
tourists. The Guide should keep up with the development of the English language, especially modern English, including colloquialism. The Guide should be able to understand what a foreign
tourist has said and then try to use understandable, if not beautiful English to
communicate with them. The Guide should remember to avoid using broken English or fluently wrong sentences to do the interpreting.
2.Natural Magnetism-Acting Ability
The Guide should try to cultivate his or her acting ability to attract
tourists. More often than not, the Guide is found to do an uninteresting interpreting, because he or she has no acting ability which attracts
tourists like a
magnet. Sometimes, the Guide's English is fluent but his or her interpreting is not satisfactory. That is, most probably, because of lack of acting ability. But, on the other hand, the Guide's English is not very good, but on account of his or her acting ability, he or she can achieve better results in the interpreting.
3.Dynamic Personality-Personable Personality or Out-Going Personality This is also necessary to a top Guide. The Guide with dynamic personality can help break the ice among strangers and help keep the conversation going on. One can not expect a taciturn Guide to be very sociable and talkative. Therefore, a Guide of introverted character is not cut out for the job of a tour Guide. Only the Guide with an out-going personality can deal with foreign
tourists friendly and sociably.
