10年前的一天，两个孩子在泰国的一所医院里降临人世。由于孩子的母亲们都在产后昏厥过去，产房内也无家人守候，加之医生未及时宣布"xx生的男孩"或"xx生的女孩"，两个小孩就这样被错抱进了对方的家庭。

然而，当男孩汶于的"父母"10年后来到女孩占通特"父母"经营的橡胶种植园打工时，不可思议的事情随即发生了。种植园的工人们发现，汶于和占通特不仅生日和出生医院都一样，两人还和对方家的其它子女长得很像（双方父母还分别育有其它子女）。于是，种种巧合让两家父母决定探个究竟。当DNA检测结果出来后，双方家庭终于明白命运之神将他们狠狠地捉弄了一把。

事后，养在富贵之家的女孩占通特心情沮丧地表示："我哭了好些天。我担心他们（亲生父母）要我和他们住在一起。我想留在现在的家，不想住在他们那里。他们不知道我爱吃什么。"占通特的养父母家里拥有一座有近千棵橡胶树的种植园，生活条件比亲身父母那边安逸许多，但这些对男孩汶于来说却没有 丝毫意义。汶于告诉自己的养父："我对那边的大房子一点都不熟悉，我也不知道和他们说些什么。"

占通特的养母、35岁的巴塔姆说："很多时候，我还是无法接受这个事实。我会永远爱她，就像曾经一样。她出生后吃我的奶吃了很久，所以我实在很难想象我抱错了孩子。而孩子与我们之间的关系早已随着时间的流逝而根深蒂固了。巴塔姆的丈夫、37岁的参南表示："当得知你抚养了10年的孩子不是你亲生的，你可以想象一下我的感受。不过，现在我很开心，因为我又多了一个儿子。我曾请求他和我们住在一起，但被他拒绝了，对此我有些伤心。"

而在种植园里打工的30岁的颂集透露说："很高兴我又多了一个女儿，但是最初得知这一消息时，我觉得很伤心，因为我没有能力照顾她。"颂集28岁的妻子婉迪表示："现在，我只能去学校远远地望着她。"

报道说，真相大白后，双方父母也曾试着将亲生的孩子带回家中生活，但孩子们几乎发狂的行为让他们只能维持现状。最后，孩子们最后又回到原先的家中。但双方父母表示，他们都会将孩子视同己出。双方父母都相信，即使孩子没有被抱错，他们的乳名也还会是"大仔"或"大妞"（即家里的投胎）。然而，据孩子班上的老师透露，俩孩子以前经常在一块儿玩耍和打闹，但现在他们都在相互回避，甚至连话都不说了。女孩占通特则表示："我们是同班同学，但我们不是朋友。"

Now DNA tests have revealed that two 10-year-olds in southern Thailand were swapped at birth - even though one is a boy and the other a girl.

Both mothers had fainted when their babies were born and no other family members were in the delivery rooms, so there were no announcements of "It's a boy" or "It's a girl."

Questions began to be asked a decade later when the parents who raised Jirivuth Boonyu, the boy, came to work at the rubber plantation where those of Orawan Chanthont, the girl, are in charge.

Colleagues remarked on resemblances between each 10-year-old and the younger child in the other family - both sets of parents had a further child. A visual comparison followed and that invited further investigation. Thailand's central institute of forensic science settled the issue.

"I cried for days," Orawan said yesterday at her home in Haad Samran. "I was afraid they would make me stay with that family. I want to stay here, I don't like staying there. They don't know what I love to eat."

An experimental swap for one night between the families left both children distraught, and for now it will not be repeated. Both sets of parents say they still regard the children they brought up as their offspring.

Orawan's pastoral mother, Prathum, 35, said: "Sometimes it is very hard for me to accept the reality.

"I love her as I always have. I breast-fed her for so long so it is really hard to think of swapping the babies. The relationship has grown for so long."

Her husband Chamnan, 37, said: "You can imagine how I felt, learning that the baby you have been taking care of for 10 years is not your real child. Now I feel happy that I have one more son. I tried to convince him to stay with us. I begged him, but he refuses. It breaks my heart."

The family own a plantation of almost 1,000 rubber trees and their home is substantially more comfortable than that of the Boonyus but that means nothing to Jirivuth.

"I don't feel familiar with the house there and I do not know what to talk about," he told his pastoral father Somjet, 30, at one of their meetings.

Somjet, a labourer, said: "I am glad I have one more daughter but at first I felt sad that I can't take care of her." His wife Wandee, 28, said: "It is a little bit hard. Now I go to school and keep an eye on her from a distance."

Both sets of parents believe the characters of the children, who are both nicknamed "One" as first-borns, would be unchanged if they had been brought up by the other family.

Virat Sribangrak, who teaches them computing and sport at school, said they used to play and fight, but now avoid each other and do not speak. "We are in the same classroom but we are not friends," Orawan said.
