Tonight I came across an article about euthanasia. Having read the article, I just felt there was something strongly fluctuating in my mind, which literally revolutionized my thinking patterns and reversed my past conviction. Why? Let me elucidate it to you in detail

In the past, each time I learnt the news that someone committed suicide, I would uncontrollably feel kinda grief for him, sighing helplessly. I really did not understand why those people would choose to end their precious lives in that way. There is a wonderful saying that since you are unafraid of death, what else can fear you? So to my mind, those who terminated their lives by their own hands or require others to do it were totally stupid. But after reading the article, my concept changed greatly.

Before I throw light upon my point, first of all, we should categorize suicides into two parts. The first kind of suicides can be called "mentality-caused suicide", which implies those people are stuck in emotional pitfalls and can barely pull themselves out. They are physically healthy but come down with depression and feel great agony and oppressive for every minute even every second. Hence, they ultimately acquire quietus by killing themselves. The second type of suicides can be defined as "physical suicide", which applies to those who have been tortured by terminal illness or great physical pain. Actually deep down in their hearts, they want to combat and live on, but the reality is, their probability of being totally cured is too slight to motivate them to fight with the great physical pain. They know distinctly that however stoutly the fight with the disease, the will meet Azrael before long. Hence they lose the courage and aspiration to live on. Worse still, besides rendering them nothing but lying on bed day and night, the devil disease tormented them by posing enormous body pain. Based on all these brutal facts, they feel little sense and spices of life. Instead, what they feel is tremendous soreness stemming from physical illness. Thereby, they would rather choose death to free themselves to the Heaven.

As for the former type of suicides, I definitely strongly deplore it. Depression can thoroughly be remedied with the aids of psychologists and families. One should never relinquish life so casually. In most cases where you feel exceedingly desperate about life, you will be greatly soothed after you open your heart to others such as folks, friends, doctors, even someone known by sight. At that time you will realize the situation is not as bad as you thought.

But as for the latter situation, I think it is actually irreproachable to adopt an appropriate painless way to give oneself a quietus. Nonetheless, before we retort to suicidal methods decisively, we should think twice, even triple! Is it the situation really so unbearable that you are reluctant to stand it even for one more second? Does the disease bring such enormous agony both to your body and your spirit that you are totally paralyzed to do anything except breathing? Is the illness truly terminal and incurable? The questions above are the criterion to tell whether you should adopt euthanasia or not. If all the answers to those questions are positive, then to my mind, one can contemplate giving up medication and receiving euthanasia. In terms of such kind of patients, life at that time seems to them senseless and painful. Liberating them from the tough circumstances is precisely a deed epitomizing humanity.

Whereas, in reality, euthanasia has not been exercised yet due to various reasons among which the most important one, as the majority of people argue, is that life is the most precious among all in the world, and we should never abandon it easily. But as we can all see from what I mention above, some people infuriatingly need euthanasia to free themselves. If we do not help them implement euthanasia, then they may probably conduct more extreme and cruel methods to end their lives, such as hanging, shooting, etc. In this sense, our well-intentioned deed has become inhumane! With the aids of euthanasia, they can go to heaven placidly, with smile on their face, which indicates the end of agony eternally. But the reality is, we still keep mercy killing outdoor. Worse still, when some kind-hearted doctors carry out mercy killings, they are suffering tremendously after doing it. A relevant true story was once reported in a newspaper. A woman with terminal liver cancer was considerably wrenched by the great pain in her liver and screamed hysterically with tears flooding her whole face. All the medicines, including barbiturate like morphine, which can release physical pain and make people calmer, become hopelessly useless to her. She was begging the doctor to give her a quietus instead of carrying on treating her. Knowing deeply in heart that the woman could have nothing but great agony until her end, the doctor promised her request and injected two more doses of morphine than ordinary need into her vessel, extricating her quietly to the Heaven. However, a disaster thus befell the doctor. After the doctor confessed what he did, all people around him censured him critically, especially the decedent's relatives. They criticized the doctor heavily for persecuting the woman! Whatever the doctor tried to expound to them, they kept their stance and prosecuted the doctor. Before long, the doctor was arrested and sentenced to death for committing knowing murder. Having read the story, I could not help voicing grievance for the doctor! I strongly approve of his deed! But my voice could do none of a little. The doctor ruined his own life because of mercy!

This story triggered a heated debate all over the society. People began to ponder over whether we should adopt mercy killing. Until now, though a lot of people have come to a consensus that we should adopt euthanasia under a given unavoidable circumstance, our policymakers are still feeling in dilemma and wavering. After all, I strongly believe we will adopt mercy killing sooner or later with further development of our society! It is a symbol of our evolving civilization and growing sense of humanitarianism. Keep in mind that suicide or killing is not always a negative deed!
