Topic: some people think stricter punishment for driving offenders is the only effective way to improve safety on the roads. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

As is universally acknowledged, a great number of traffic accidents lead to numerous deaths and countless property loss all over the world very year. Among various complicated reasons, driving offenders count greatly. Therefore, some people argue that stricter punishment for driving offenders is the only way to improve safety on the roads. Is it really that case? I would like to share with you my views.

Admittedly, driving offenders do contribute enormously to the traffic accidents. Many drivers break traffic rules and regulations to compete with time or simply do to their own will regardless of the potential hazards menacing others' lives. For instance, some drivers are totally drunk before they steer wheels. Another typical example is that some drivers do not comply with the guidance of the traffic lights and pass the red light deliberately. Such drivers ought to be penalized severely by fining, canceling the licenses or even putting them into jail. This can doubtlessly ring the alarm of other drivers who originally want to do the same thing and largely reduce the traffic accidents.

Nonetheless, is punishing the driving offenders strictly the only way to improve the safety on the roads? I do keep skeptical of this assertion. As far as I see, beyond punishment to the driving offenders, there are still other ways to achieve the same goal. To begin with, we all know that the carelessness of the pedestrians also triggers some accidents. For example, some of the pedestrians also violate the traffic rules and cross the road before the traffic light turns green. Thereby, we should publicize the traffic rules to the public and raise their awareness of the safety. Secondly, we should detach sufficient policemen to supervise the flow of the vehicles and people along the road in order to lower the frequency of rule-violation. Moreover, the policemen can also take immediate actions to save lives when some emergency occurs! On top of that, the government should design the traffic paths aptly, like building more flyovers, widening the roads, etc, to eliminate some potential dangers. All these can conduce exceedingly to the safety on the roads!

Altogether, imposing a stricter punishment for the driving offenders is really an effective way to improve the safety on the roads, but besides that, we can adopt more measures to reach our goal. Only by combining all the methods together can we finally establish a harmonious and safe traffic condition on the roads!
