Topic: People often look at similarities, even between very different things, and even when it is unhelpful or harmful to do so. Instead, a thing should be considered on its own terms, and we should avoid the tendency to compare it to something else.

Our world is a diverse entity that comprises a variety of creatures and lifeless substances. Moreover, its diversification is increasingly deepening at a staggering speed with time passing by. Witnessing the growing diversification of all the things on our planet, it is more than natural for us to seek the inherent similarities between them both physically and essentially. Through singing out their similarities, we can have a better understanding of the two subjects, which may contribute to a better exploitation of them. For instance, through comparing birds and human beings, we came to realize that birds could fly with two wings, while human could not without them. Then we went all out to imitate the birds by devising some similar vehicles that had two man-made wings like birds. Through trials and errors, Brother Wright eventually invented the first plane successfully, which became a remarkable landmark for the start of the aviation industry. This example can strongly justify that comparison does have numerous favorable effects on our development. Therefore I strongly oppose the point in the latter part of the topic that a thing should be considered on its own terms, and we should avoid the tendency to compare it to something else.

Now let's come back to the former part of the topic. The author claims that people often look at similarities, even between very different things, and even when it is unhelpful or harmful to do so. I keep skeptical towards this viewpoint. First of all, I think it nonsense to make such a statement that people often look at similarities even between very different things! If two things are almost the same, the similarities are obvious, so why do we still need to "look at" them? Most of the time, we are trying to explore similarities between different things, especially when they are remarkably different. Of course, I do not mean that we should compare everything with another even though they are radically irrelevant. For example, it is totallyridiculous for us to compare birds with cups, for the comparison provides no practical information for us at all. We compare two things that are somewhat relevant to each other and the comparison can give us some guidance. A common and typical illustration can be made that by comparing two anti-cough drugs we can know their disease-curing abilities and their side effects, so that we can make an appropriate choice when we come down with cough.

To conclude, all the assertions in the topic are not logically and reasonably correct. From my perspective, I think we need proper and practical comparison!
