A deaf collie puppy confined to kennels for two months because prospective adopters have overlooked him has been taught sign language in an effort to find him a new home.
Eight-month-old Blue was taken in by the RSPCA's Little Valley animal shelter, in Exeter, Devon, last November, because his owners could not devote enough time to him.
"Blue is laid back and gentle and visitors stop to give him attention," said Gill Hodge, the centre's dog behavioural assistant. "But because he is deaf people are a bit put off."
Blue's deafness meant staff could not train him with voice commands in the usual way, so they have taught him his own special form of sign language. He knows seven signed signals and commands, his favourite of which is the thumbs-up sign, meaning "good boy".
Miss Hodge said Blue needed an active and experienced owner willing to continue his sign language and devote a lot of time to him, preferably in a home with another dog.
