Detectives investigating last week's ?53m Securitas depot robbery have charged three people in connection with the raid.

John Fowler, a 57-year-old car dealer from Staplehurst, Kent, was last night charged with conspiracy to rob the cash depot in Tonbridge, as well as three counts of kidnapping the depot's manager, Colin Dixon, his wife, Lynn, and their nine-yearold son, Craig.

Stuart John Royle, 47, a car salesman of no fixed abode, was charged with conspiracy to rob, while Kim Shackleton, a 39-year-old woman from Maidstone, was charged with handling stolen goods. The three are due to appear at Maidstone magistrates court at 9.30am today.

They are the first people to be charged in connection with last Wednesday's raid, Britain's biggest ever cash robbery. One woman arrested on Monday was yesterday released on police bail. Kent police also revealed late last night that magistrates had granted them an extension to question two other men being held until 9am this morning.

Elizabeth Howe, the chief prosecutor for Kent Crown Prosecution Service said: "I have been working closely with the investigation team from the start. We have preferred these very serious charges after due examination of the existing evidence."

Adrian Leppard, the assistant chief constable of Kent police, who is leading the investigation, said last night: "I remain pleased with the progress of this case. This investigation is likely to continue for many months and possibly years as we track those responsible and indeed all of the stolen money."

Kent police conducted a series of road checks this week, stopping more than 600 vehicles at four locations to ask motorists if they had seen anything in the area on the night of the robbery. One checkpoint was near Tonbridge, one close to Herne Bay, another in Faversham and a fourth close to the depot.

Following the robbery, Securitas and its insurers posted a ?2m reward for information leading to the recovery of the cash and the arrest of those behind the raid. Yesterday, those employees not caught up in the robbery were returning to work at the depot for the first time.
