An initial attempt by firefighters to carry the 35-year-old from his fourth-floor apartment to an ambulance using a gurney failed.

They then built an improvized ramp on his balcony using planks and a pallet as 10 firemen slid the patient into an emergency services basket attached to a crane.

An outsized ambulance was brought to the scene. The three-hour operation included 35 firefighters.
