　　The artwork made $35,856,000 (?20,496,908) at Christie's in New York. The record for the most expensive British painting had been held by Constable's The Lock. It sold for ?12m in 1990. The painting was put up for sale by the St Francis of Assisi Foundation in New York State.

　　The Venice painting, last seen at public auction more than 100 years ago, also blew away the world record for a Turner.

　　It is based on a series of watercolours he painted on his last trip to Venice the year before.

　　It is one of three oil paintings produced by the artist for the Royal Academy of Arts Exhibition of 1841.

　　'Giudecca' is described as the finest Old Master to be sold at Christie's in New York since 1989.
