Once upon a time a man appeared in a village and announced to the villagers that he would buy monkeys for $10 each.
从前有个商人来到村庄，他向村民们宣布，将以每只10美元的价格收购猴子。
The villagers, seeing that there were many monkeys around, went out to the forest and started catching them. The man bought thousands at $10 and, as supply started to diminish, the villagers stopped their effort. He next announced that he would now buy monkeys at $20 each. This renewed the efforts of the villagers and they started catching monkeys again. Soon the supply diminished even further and people started going back to their farms.

The offer increased to $25 each and the supply of monkeys became so scarce it was an effort to even find a monkey, let alone catch it! The man now announced that he would buy monkeys at $50 each! However, since he had to go to the city on some business, his assistant would buy on his behalf.
有人提议把报价提高到每只25美元，但这时猴子已经非常稀缺，想找到一只都很难，更不用说去捕捉它们。于是商人宣布他将以每只50美元的价格收购猴子。然而，由于他不得不返回城里处理一些生意，他的助手将作为收猴子的全权代表。
In the absence of the man, the assistant told the villagers: 'Look at all these monkeys in the big cage that the man has already collected. I will sell them to you at $35 and when the man returns from the city, you can sell them to him for $50 each.' The villagers rounded up all their savings and bought all the monkeys for 700 billion dollars.
商人外出之后，他的助手告诉村民们："你们看到所有猴子都已经被商人关在笼子里了。我将把它们以每只35美元的价格卖给你们，等商人从城里回来，你们将可以每只50美元的价格卖给他"。村民们于是取出他们所有的积蓄--一共七千亿美元，购买了所有那些猴子。
