这首词不知是李煜早年之作，还是亡国以后所写。名为《相见欢》，写得却是离别愁。整首词读下来，感觉写的就是"寂寞"二字。无言，并非无话可说，而是无人可与共语。只好独上西楼，伴着如钩残月，寂寞梧桐，那种黯然神伤的滋味，实在是难以言表啊。

人生境遇无常，任你王侯将相，巨富豪绅，只怕也难事事如意。以李煜一国之尊，也要写出这样无奈的词句来。此词如果是他早年所作，极可能是写的宫廷生活中悲欢离合的插曲；若是归宋后所写，则可能是咏怀故国山河了。 正如REM的这首Everybody Hurts里唱到的那样，everybody cries and everybody hurts sometimes。伤心之事，人人难免。剪不断，理还乱，一人独处的时候，触景生情，最易伤怀，正是所谓"独自莫凭栏"（《浪淘沙》），所以歌中也唱到"Take comfort in your friends"。别是一般滋味在心头，是李煜这首词中点睛之笔，其中意境，恐怕非语言所能传递，也只有音乐才能表达了。
