The quest for the American dream is turning into a nightmare of gridlock, ravaged farmland, and lost communities. Only wise planning can reverse this pattern.

1960年，美国最流行的歌曲之一就是这首The Brothers Four演唱组的Greenfields，歌曲的开头唱道：

Once there were greenfields, kissed by the sun/Once there were valleys where rivers used to run/Once there were blue skies with white clouds high above/Once they were part of an everlasting love....

短短数行，便唤起了人们年轻时代的感伤回忆：这，曾经是美国最好的风景......
四十年来，这首歌无数次的在电台中被播放，可是，这些绿地都到了哪里去了呢？

小镇社区被条带状的商业区取代，田野变成了停车场。绿地消失在工业化的都市边缘的同时，处于内部的城市丧失了很多工作机会以及支撑公立学校所必需的税款，人口集中居住在大都市中，而且渐渐都移向都市的外围，从而使得都市不断扩张。这就是美国的社会学家们所面临的当今最富挑战性的社会问题，sprawl development，直译成中文，就是"爬行发展"。这种趋势就如沙漠吞并周围的地区一般，如果不采取措施，不需要很长的时间，存在的就只有几十个庞大无比的大都市了。 每次听到这首歌的时候，我总是不禁想起我的孩提时代，虽然这首歌是一首爱情歌曲。我的家后面是秦淮新河，秦淮河水经由这条人工开凿的河道流入长江。曾几何时，河堤上是碧绿的青草地，上面长着不知名的小花，蝴蝶与蜜蜂萦绕其间。河边长着长长一排垂柳，不少柳枝点着水面，风一吹过，便荡起涟漪。那时的河水是清澈的，夏天的时候，游泳玩水自然是顽童们的一大乐趣。童年的很多时光，都是在这片绿地上度过的。然而如今，绿地已经变成了简易码头，垂柳当然是一株不剩，原来的草地，现在成了垃圾场，看到那如小山般的碎玻璃和矿渣堆，我实在是再也没有上河堤散步的心情了。回忆起儿时的绿地，有的只是几多惆怅的感叹而已。只希望美国的噩梦不会重新出现在中国的身上。

曾经，这儿有绿地，阳光亲吻着它。

绿地现在消失了，阳光烘烤着土地。
从山谷中消失了，抢镌?泻铀?鞴??BR>随着冷风消失了，冷风直吹入我的心间。
随着情侣消失了，情侣们任自己的梦想消散。
我们曾经徜徉的绿地啊，都到哪儿去了？
