A woman has finally passed her driving test after 23 years. Maria McCarthy went through 10 instructors and 250 lessons in her attempt to gain a licence.

　　She first got behind the wheel aged 17 but didn't qualify until her 40th birthday nearly a quarter of a century later. She says she suffered a form of "driving dyslexia" which saw her unable to negotiate roundabouts and corners. She was so bad that during her 23-year apprenticeship she was only ever ready to take two tests - and passed the second.

　　She says her particular trouble spots were mini-roundabouts and dual carriageways which both made her "very nervous". 　　But after more than two decades of attempts she has finally made the grade and has bought a blue Vauxhall Astra.

　　She said: "I was so bad, I could never get to test level. It was down to a mixture of nerves and lack of ability."
