Neil: This is Real English from BBC Learning English. I'm Neil.
Helen: And I'm Helen.
Neil: Today we're going to look at words and phrases that have recently become part of the English language.
Helen: 今天的 Real English, 我们来学
学英语中出现的新习惯用语。
Neil: English has a lot of vocabulary. One of the reasons for this is that new words are constantly coming into use.
Helen: 所以跟着 Real English
学英语是非常重要的。
Neil: Absolutely!
Helen: 今天要教我们什么新词儿啊,Neil.
Neil: Today's new word is "hoody". ? H.O.O.D.Y. ? hoody.
Helen: Hoody, 是什么意思啊?
Neil: Well, a hoody is a teenage boy who typically wears a sweatshirt with a hood.
Helen: 哦,hoody就是指那些穿着运动衣裹着头巾戴着帽子的青少年。
Neil: Yes, but the name hoody has a
negative sense for many people.
Helen: Hoody 是个贬义词,能不能再给我们解释解释,Neil。
Neil: Yes. Hoodies are often violent or commit crime.
Helen: Hoodies 就是那些特别不愤儿的暴力小混混儿,有那么厉害吗?
Neil: Yes. Hoodies are often responsible for violent crimes or street robberies.
Helen: 哦,这些叫 hoody 的人,就是那些爱找事儿的年轻人,他们其实才只有十几岁呀。
Neil: That's right.
Insert
A: I don't feel safe going into the town centre at night.
B: Me neither. There are gangs of hoodies just standing around or causing trouble.
Helen: 那 Neil, 是所有的 hoody 都有暴力倾向吗?
Neil: I don't think so, but they look frightening.
Helen: 他们看上去都很凶。
Neil: Yes. Hoodies look dangerous, so many people avoid them.
Helen: Right, okay.
Neil: I have seen many hoodies in England, but I have never had a problem.
Helen: Really?
Neil: No, never. But I still prefer to stay away from hoodies if possible.
Helen: 那倒是, 能避开就避开吧。
Neil: But, Helen, most teenagers are really lovely people. Anyway, let's recap ? a hoody - means a teenager wearing a hooded sweatshirt who intimidates others or causes violence.
Helen: 这个词就是爱找事儿的小年轻儿,而且还都一副气势汹汹的样子。好了,Neil,咱们结束的时间要到了。
