Looking for a partner at matchmaking fair



About 10,000 people in Chongqing attended a matchmaking fair in the city's Zhiyanhe Bar Street on Sunday.



With ages ranging from 20 to 70, many participants said they had come to look for a friend of the opposite sex for their shy family members.



A 5-year-old boy, in the arms of his mother, held up a signboard looking for a spouse for his grandmother.



The signboard detailed all relevant information about her.

Student boss of two companies



A student majoring in computer science at Chonging University of Posts and Telecommunications is the boss of two real estate agencies in the city and earns about 20,000 yuan ($2,597) a month.



Chen Xing worked as an intern in a real estate agency last summer and found he could make it in the field.



He borrowed 10,000 yuan ($1,299) from relatives to set up his own agency. As the agency was successful, he opened a second one soon after.



He attends class every day, and manages the agencies on weekends.

Water quality of lake deteriorates



Jinwei Lake in Baoji, Shaanxi Province in Northwest China, is deteriorating due to growth of aquatic plants on its surface.



The lake, located in the center of the city, covers an area of 1.4 million square meters and is a popular recreation area for residents.



Experts said rapid growing of algae in the lake was caused by the warm and dry weather. The growth is causing an ecological imbalance and the water quality is deteriorating.



"The algae cannot be removed by dredging. The lake's water needs to be replaced from upstream rivers during the rainy season," experts said.

Divorce has its compensation



More than 100 couples in Geping Village in Yibin County in Sichuan have divorced or are planning to divorce.



The reason - more housing space.



An investigation by the county civil affairs bureau found the couples, whose ages range from 20 to 60, are getting divorced to get more compensation from the local government's acquisition of their land.



Their village is near the county seat and its land is be acquired by the county government soon.



According to the government's policy, each couple could receive an additional 10 square meters of housing if they were divorced. Although the county civil affairs bureau thinks it inappropriate for the couples to divorce, it has approved 30 applications so far.

Man bitten in rat infested room



Liu Xiang, a 28-year-old man from Sichuan, was bitten by a rat when he tried to catch it.



Liu rented a room in Chenjiaqiao, Chongqing, which he later found to be infested with rats.



Last Thursday, a rat crawled up on the bed terrifying his girlfriend who fled the room.



The next day, Liu borrowed a cat from a friend and went in search of the rats.



He found one, and in trying to catch it, the rat jumped up and bit Liu on the forehead.

Better protection for ancient ruins



The Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in Northwest China has adopted stern measures to better protect its ancient ruins and relics.



A regulation issued recently stipulates that anyone who enters the ancient ruins without authorized permission will be fined between 20,000 yuan ($2,564) and 100,000 yuan ($12,821).



Xinjiang has 58 national protection sites such as Loulan and Niya which have been threatened by unauthorized visitors.
