We have some things in common

Actors can be similar to their on-screen characters, or they can be quite different.

Yao Chen, who stars Guo Furong in the popular TV comedy My Own Swordsmen (Wulin Waizhuan), falls into the latter category.

While 22-year-old Guo Furong is loud and sassy, 27-year-old Yao from Fujian Province is tender and soft-spoken. She said her most enjoyable time is padding around her cozy home in slippers.

21st Century chatted with her about her life on and off the screen.

21st: You were recognized by audience for your role as Guo Furong. Are you like Guo in real life?

Yao: We have something in common. We tend to fight unfairness and help other people.

But I'm not a tomboy. In a way, Guo represents my ideal. She's the type who dares to love and hate and speak her mind. By contrast, I look for balance and tend to consider others' feelings, so I often hesitate. Anyway, both types are cute.

Interestingly, I grew more like Guo as the show went on: acting and speaking in a very boyish way. I turned from a shy girl to a more outgoing, talkative one. Now I'm slowly regaining my old self.

21st: Why do you think the TV show became such a hit?

Yao: The whole thing is about tolerance in life - martial arts or violence can't solve anything. Only communication and mutual understanding can. It teaches young people, including me, a nice lesson.

21st: You've been married for three years and you never avoid talking about it. Aren't you worried that it will affect your career?

Yao: It's natural. Why do I have to keep it a secret? My husband is also an actor who was my classmate. So when I tried to find roles for TV dramas, I always tried to find two: one for me, one for my husband. He did the same. In this way we can stay together for a long time.

My friends laughed at me. They said that directors would reject me. I responded, "I'm not going for matchmaking. I'm going for the role."

21st: How do you view fame and how does it affect your life?

Yao: I have not changed much. When I started acting fresh out of school, I would only take big roles in serious dramas. Now I have changed. This way I broaden my chances. It's easier to get roles if you are famous.

A girl once wrote to tell me how Guo Furong had changed her from a shy to a bold person. This made me realize that I have a social responsibility as a TV star. Since we use a lot of precious public resources ? occupying TV time, we have a duty to be positive in our influence.

Besides, we have to make sacrifices. This means we can't be bothered by all those comments about us - good or bad.
