The progress of the Greeks in the realm of art was amazing in its swiftness. It begins at about 620 B.C.,when the statues found are quite archaic. In little less than 200years we reach the glorious work of Pheidias and Ictinus.
As an illustration of this early archaic period we may take the very crude statue of Artemis, discovered at Delos. It dates form about 620 B.C.,and is of
intense interest. The Greeks called these figures xoana---- that is to say, images carved in wood, this being the material of which this figure is made.Exceedingly primitive in form,it gives no indication of what is to come. There is no skill exhibited in it.any savage race could have produced a figure as
successfully.
If we pass over a period of seventy years we find a startlingly new development. We find in the winged figure by Archermus(550 B.C.)the first attempt to show movement. In the Egyptian figures the feet were always firmly planted on the ground, and even then the figures were almost
invariably male.Still more interesting is the fact that this winged goddess is smilling.True, the smile may not be all that could be desried, but it is the first smile in art.And that smile means the birth of sentiment and the birth of emotion.
