OVERWHELMED BY AN OCEAN OF TROUBLES?
By: Whit Criswell
I remember
seeing the ocean for the first time. I was 18, on my first
weekend pass from the U.S. Marine Corps. We rode a bus from Camp Pendleton over to a beach in the San Onofre-San Mateo area of California. When I saw all that water, I was mesmerized! (I had been raised on a South Dakota ranch where the average annual rainfall is just 18 inches per year.)
I was with some guys from California who had grown up playing in the ocean. The first thing they did was head out into the waves for some body-surfing. I watched them for a couple of minutes as they swam out into the ocean, then turned toward the beach, letting the big waves
propel them back.
It looked like tremendous fun, so I tried it. It was not fun.
The swimming out part was OK, and the ride back was exhilarating, but it sure didn't
compensate for having a wave slam me down on the beach, or for the blood I lost and the
gravel and sand that was ground into my knees and elbows. That day I began to develop a great respect for the power of the ocean-and a
genuine fear.
Proceeding through life is somewhat like venturing into the ocean. Right now, you are in at least one of these three basic conditions:
a) You have been "slammed."
b) You are being slammed.
c) You are going to be slammed.
The question is, how do you respond?
Oswald Chambers, in "My Utmost For His Highest," writes: "Huge waves that would frighten an ordinary swimmer produce a tremendous thrill for the surfer who has
ridden them. Let's apply that to our own circumstances. The things we try to avoid and fight against-tribulation, suffering, and persecution-are the very things that produce abundant joy in us. 'We are more than conquerors through Him'...not in spite of them, but in the midst of them. A saint doesn't know the joy of the Lord in spite of tribulation, but because of it. Paul said, 'I am
exceedinglyjoyful in all our tribulation' (2 Corinthians 7:4)."
In the Marine Corps, I spent a lot of training time in the ocean. Gradually my fear turned to respect, and I could experience the exhilaration of the sea-even to the extent that the last vacation my wife, Liz, and I had was last December when we spent a whole week on a sailboat in the British Virgin Islands.
In life, I'm learning not to fear the problems that
confront me. I don't always respond in a Christ-honoring way, but more and more I see I'm willing to
patiently endure the difficult times in life because I know my sovereign God is
totally in control and I can trust that He will work things out for my good and His glory - if I will simply trust and obey Him.
Whit Criswell
