Taking a page from the free-spirited 1960s, Diane von Furstenberg showed a spring collection that was sprinkled with hippie looks gypsy-style dresses done in lace or bright, floral fabrics, flowing chiffon kaftans and ruffled, tiered skirts. Models trotted down the runway wearing headbands threaded with faux flowers to complete the look.

In her show program, Ms. von Furstenberg said the collection was an 'homage to Diana Vreeland,' the 1960s editor-in-chief of Vogue and enduring fashion icon. And the looks indeed were a throwback to Ms. Vreeland's heyday-- the pieces came out in a vivid whirl of bold colors such as magenta, plum and rust. Many bore striking patterns one large print featured oversized butterflies. Blousey jumpsuits and harem pants a look that has popped up in the spring collections of cutting-edge designers such as Alexander Wang and Elise Overland so far also made an appearance in Ms. von Furstenberg's show.

Designers this season are hoping that striking looks and novel pieces will nudge shoppers to start spending on apparel again. Retail sales of womenswear in the U.S. are expected to post a slight decline in 2008, as women have cut back on buying apparel as gas and food prices have soared.

Glenda Bailey, editor-in-chief of Harpers Bazaar magazine, said she felt Ms. von Furstenberg's 'vibrant prints, the freedom and ease of the clothes' would likely appeal to shoppers in spring. 'When you looked at that show, you thought of the Rolling Stones, peace and love that's got to be a good thing, right?' said Ms. Bailey, who also added that women often gravitate toward bold colors during troubled times, noting that lipstick sales soared following the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. 'When we live in troubled times, we need bright clothes, prints, things that make us feel more cheerful.'

The show ended on a high-note, with the designertaking her bows to Diana Ross's 'I'm Coming Out' as front-row stars such as Eva Longoria, Jennifer Lopez and 'Gossip Girl' actress Leighton Meester bopped along to the 1980 song.

On his way out, Ron Frasch, president and chief merchandising officer at Saks Fifth Avenue, had high praise for Ms. von Furstenberg's collection. 'It was a lot of color and retro influence, which we like I enjoyed everything.' When asked what he thought would sell well at Saks, however, Mr. Frasch was more cautious. The high-end retailer, after all, recently told investors it would be 'very conservative' when purchasing spring designer looks.

'I'll look at it in the showroom and can answer this better after that,' he said.
