SCIENTISTS WARN EU PESTICIDE BAN WILL HIT FOOD SUPPLY
Plans to ban harmful chemicals from pesticides could have a devastating effect on food production within the European Union, scientists have warned.
A group of leading UK agricultural researchers said the new laws would see a cut in the range of crop chemicals sold in EU markets and urged the UK to oppose the proposals.
EU agriculture ministers last week agreed changes to the pesticide authorisation system that would
effectively ban the use of carcinogenic chemicals and substances that damage human hormones or the reproductive system.
The laws would reduce the range of products that could be sold in EU markets.
In an open letter to Hilary Benn, the food and
environment minister, seven UK scientists on the 2 July argued that the proposals would make it more difficult to control disease and sharply reduce yields.
The
warning comes at a time when world population is growing faster than agricultural production and food
commodity prices are at an all time high.
"Pesticides are potentially
hazardous" title="a.
hazardous and have to be regulated but current legislation is the gold standard on the world stage," said Dr Ian Denholm, head of plant and invertebrate ecology at the Rothamsted Research, the UK's largest agricultural research centre.
"A
diversity of pesticides is important in minimising the
likelihood of resistance."
A legislation
impact assessment by
environmental consultancy ADAS found that the loss of certain pesticides and insecticides could reduce yields of key crops such as potatoes and wheat by as much as 25 per cent.
The report was funded by the European Crop Protection Association.
The draft EU legislation changes the way safety is assessed from a risk-based methodology to one based on
hazard. Products considered safe now could be banned.
"Just because a product has intrinsically
hazardous" title="a.
hazardous properties does not mean it is dangerous," said Hugh Oliver-Bellasis, chairman of the British Crop Protection Council and the Royal Agricultural Society of England.
