Period 1 (Unit 7 BII) Warming Up & Listening & Speaking

Aims:
1.Check students’ knowledge about HIV/ AIDS.
2.Talk about attitude toward the diseases.
3.Develop students’ listening and speaking abilities.

Teaching Procedures
I. Warming up
1.Get the students to answer questions on P49.
2.Talk about the pictures on P49

II. Listening
1.Answer the questions in Part 1 to gather basic information about what Jane’s job is and how she works.
2.Take noted of what is heard in Part 2 and use the notes to tell a partner about what Jane has said.
3.Apply what has been learnt by imagining that they were a disease detective who had been asked to investigate a new disease.

III. Speaking
1.Group work
Each ole discusses about one social problem.
Report after the discussion, trying to persuade other group that your problem is the most serious one.
2.Learn to use the useful expressions in the report.

Aims:

2.Reading strategy: Prediction through asking questions.


Teaching Procedures
I. Pre-reading
1.Ask students to raise some questions according to the title and the illustrations of the text.
Ask some of the students to write the questions on the blackboard, the more, the better.
2.Go through the text quickly and answer their questions.

II. Reading (student’s sheet)
1.Read the passage and summarize the knowledge of AIDS/HIV.
2.Check the answers.
1)What is AIDS?
AIDS is a disease that breaks down the body’s immune system and leaves a person defenceless against infections and illnesses.
2)In what situation do people get AIDS?
When they have been infected with HIV.
3)What is HIV?
HIV is the virus that causes AIDS.
4)How do people transmit HIV?
By having unprotected sex, by receiving infected blood transfusion or through birth.
5)In total 3.2 million children in the world were infected with HIV in 2002. the disease is spreading fast in Africa and parts of Asia due to a lack of proper health care, prevention and education. The young suffer the most.
6)The AIDS patients not only suffer from the disease but also have to deal with people’s attitude towards them
7)We should know more about AIDS and then we’ll not be afraid to have contact with people who have AIDS. Let’s give them a big hug.
3.Read again and get the story of Xiao Hua.
