1.Imagine this: you are twenty-one years old and a promising graduate student at one of the top universities in the world.
promising: adj. “有希望的；有出息的，有前途的”e.g. The weather is promising.天气可望好转。
Promising 的名词形式是promise，表示“有成功或良好结果的希望；有前途”e.g. He is a writer of promise. 他是个有前途的作家。

2.How would you feel ?What would you do ?Most of us would probable feel very sad…. (would 表虚拟)
If I were you, I would advise her to stop doing that.
If she lived nearer, I would invite her.

3.(There did not seem) much point in working on my PhD.
There is no point in doing 做…没有意义或作用
There is no point in arguing further.
There’s no point in protesting. It won’t help much.

4.Nor did he let the disease stop him from living …..倒装句
(含有否定意义的副词或连词放句首时:hardly,never,not ,,not only little,nor,neither…)

Only所修饰的副词,介词短语或状语从句放在句首时:

Task4: Grammar – The infinitive 不定式

The infinitive used as subject 主语
To see is to believe .
To know sth about English is one thing; to know English is quite another

It 做形式主语
It is not an easy thing to master a language.
It seems a pity to refuse.It took them a year to complete the project. It is not hard for one to do a bit of good .
It is a great honor for us to be present at this rally.

It 做形式主语

但是在某些形容词如：kind good , wise, clever , silly , wrong , right,. Careless, considerate, rude, naughty, 等做表语的时候， 不定式前可加 一个of 引起短语，来说明不定式指的是谁的情况。
It is so kind of you to think so much of us.It is awfully good of you to come and meet us.It is unwise of them to turn down the proposal.

The infinitive used as predictive 表语
The problem is to find a solution .The most important thing is to put theory into practice.

The infinitive used as attribute 定语
Do you have anything more to say?
The teacher assigned us two exercises to do at home.
He is not a man to bow before difficulty.

The infinitive used as object 宾语
常以不定式做宾语的动词有：
want . like , wish , hope , prefer, try , ask , continue, manage , offer , start ,forget, promise , mean , pretend, intend , begin, attempt, decide, learn, desire, agree, choose , care , determine , undertake, expect etc.

此外, tell , advise , show , teach , find out. Decide , discuss, learn , forget. 等词常带一个连接代词副词的不定式做宾语
He did not know whether to laugh or to cry when he heard the words.
I hope you will advise me what to do.She considered how to answer the question.

另外，在某些复合宾语中 常用it 代表不定式， 而把不定式放在后面
She thought it unnecessary to argue with them about it.

The infinitive used as adverbial 状语
We must do everything we can to help him.He left, never to return.To hear him talk in that matter, you would think him a foreigner.
He was annoyed to hear them talk like that.
The room is comfortable to live in.A foreign language is as a rule hard to learn .

The basic structure of the infinitive

一般式 To do To be done
进行式 To be doing /
完成式 To have done To have been done
完成进行式To have been done /

如果谓语表示的动作(情况)发生时, 不定式表示动作正在进行,这时候不定式就要用进行式.
They are said to be building another bridge across the street.
I’m glad to be working with you.

如果不定式的动作是在谓语所表示的时间之前一直进行的动作，就要用完成式.
