Teaching Procedures:
Step1. Warming up
1. Look at a map of the world and find out how many continents and oceans there are in the world and what their names are. Then talk about the positions of Asia and China. (show a map of the world)
How many continents are there in the world? What are they?
(7 continents: Asia, Europe, North America, South America, Oceania, Africa, Antarctica)
How many oceans are there in the world?
(4 oceans: the Pacific Ocean, the Atlantic Ocean, the Indian Ocean, the Arctic Ocean)
And where is China in relation to Asia? (It’s in the east of Asia.)
3.Look at a map of China and talk about the
location of some provinces, autonomous regions, municipalities and special
administrative regions by using “lie in / lie on /lie to / lie off”.
(show a map of China)
Beijing lies/ is in the north of China.
Hubei lies/ is (to the) south of Hebei.
Hubei lies/ is on the north of Hunan.
Hubei lies/ is to the north of Hunan.
Hainan Island lies off the south coast of China.
China lies on the west of the Pacific Ocean.
3. Summarize how to describe the location/ position of a place.
Lie in –The small place is part of the bigger one.
Lie on –It is used when we
emphasize the two places share border with each other, or when we say a piece of land is just near a river, a sea or an ocean.
Lie to –The two places are apart from each other and usually they don’t share border. When two places share border, “lie to” can also be used.
Lie off the coast of – It is used when we say that an island lies off the coast of a mainland.
The teacher writes the following on the blackboard.

4. Look at some major countries that are neighbors of China and describe their positions in relation to China.
Major neighbors:
North: Mongolia, Russia
South: India, Burma(缅甸), Thailand, the Philippines
West: Pakistan, Tajikistan
East: South Korea, North Korea, Japan
Eg. Mongolia lies to the north of China.
5. Look at the seas around China. What are their names? And what are their relations to China?
(They are the Bohai Sea, the Yellow Sea, the East China Sea, the South China sea)
(Bohai Sea, Yellow Sea and the East China Sea lie / are to the east of China.
The South China Sea lies/ is to the south of China.)
6. A
competition between two groups--ask the students to use “lie in/ on / to / off” to describe the position of a place. (show a map of China)
Step 2. Listening
(1) As we know, when we want to learn about a place, one of the most important things is to know about its geography, its location. Now we will listen to a short passage about a fictional island---Dolphin Island. (Neither the island itself nor any of its cities or mountains exist.) Before the listening, I will tell you the names of the cities and mountains on this island.
