Internet Survey
"A mixed blessing" is the very expression to describe what the Internet brings to us. The nine-item survey below is designed to test your tendency to become addicted to the "Net".
In the mid-1990's people became fascinated with the Internet. All of the sudden, information was available on any topic imaginable. It was as if someone collected all of the world's knowledge, put it together on an easy-to-use interface, and handed it to anyone who wanted it. With so much information at our fingertips, it is hardly an
astonishingphenomenon that some users couldn't seem to get enough. For hours on end, these people would sit at their computers and breathe in the entire
universe of knowledge. As the content increased and the number of things one could actually do increased dramatically, people began to display symptoms of what is now called "Internet addiction."
The nine-item survey below is designed to test your tendency to become addicted to the "Net". Please review each of the questions below and make a note of how many times you answer "Yes." After completing the survey, read the explanation that best corresponds to your score.

Internet Search
If you are assigned to write an article about space research, we will be visiting both a university library and a virtual library (namely, the internet) to see how we can get information we need from them.
Go and ask help from a friend.
Go to the library to search for information.
Go to a bookstore and buy books on the topic.
Get onto the internet and search for
relevant information from websites.
Go and ask help from a teacher.
Piles and piles of
catalogue cards, stacks and stacks of bookshelves, loads and loads of books. It could take you an hour or more before you can lay your hands on the book you want. We just sit in front of a computer, get on to the Internet, key in the words "space research" and will have a whole list of available resources in an instant (瞬间).
If I need to get some up-to-date information on space research, I can visit (search for) a lot of websites. All I need to do is to get onto the Internet, and key in (type in) the key words or the website, then click on Go. The information there will be free. I only need to pay the cost of a local call.
Internet Problems
Some
educational specialists point out the
negative effect the Internet can bring to people, especially the young learners.
1. Computers in the classroom can raise
educational standards.
Educational specialists point out that there is no evidence to support this. Some even question whether it is a good idea to encourage young learners to have
access to the Internet.
2. Internet is a vast
storehouse of valuable knowledge.
Educational specialists describe the Internet as a medium that has no quality control(质量监控) because anyone can post anything on the Internet. No editors will test their contributions. It is like a library that contains works of both the talentless and the talented, a picture gallery that exhibits both great works of art and childish scribbles, a museum that contains
rubbish as well as wonderful treasures.
3. We should give young learners increased
access to the Internet so that they can get a vast amount of materials.
Educational specialists point out that this is a mixed blessing(好坏参半) because if the young learners are not educated to be discriminating (有辨别能力的), they may gain knowledge and
genuine understanding, but at the same time they may be exposed to ignorance and
foolishness as well.
On the Internet, as in life, men and women have different motivations for doing what they do.
On the Internet, as in life, men and women have different motivations for doing what they do. According to a recent report from Pew Internet and American Life, women view the Internet as a place to extend, support, and nurture relationships and communities. Men tend to see it as an office, a library, or a playground--screw the
community, this is about function not family.
The report found that women are more
enthusiastic communicators, using email in a more
robust way. Not only sending and receiving more email than men, women are more likely to write to family and friends about a variety of topics, sharing news, joys and worries, planning events, and forwarding jokes and stories.
While both sexes equally appreciate the
efficiency and
convenience of email, women are more likely than men to value the medium for its
positive effects on improving relationships and encouraging teamwork at the office.
"Women also value email for a kind of
positive, water-cooler effect, which lightens the atmosphere of office life," reads the 54-page report.
The report found that women are more likely to use the Internet for emailing, getting maps and directions (after all, we men always know where we're going), looking for health and medical information, seeking support for health and personal problems, and getting religious information.

intense Internet users than women, being more likely to go online daily (61% of men and 57% of women) and more likely to go online several times a day (44% of men and 39% of women).
