A section of an Interstate Highway
bridge over the Skagit River in Mount Vernon, Wash., collapsed Thursday evening, sending vehicles into the water from which three motorists were rescued, state officials said.
There were no fatalities reported at the scene, about 60 miles north of Seattle, said Marcus Deyerin, the public affairs officer for the five-county incident-management team that responded to the collapse.
Mr. Deyerin said there was 'no indication' that anyone other than the three rescued went into the water or that anyone was unaccounted for.
Authorities at the
location said the
collapse on Interstate 5 occurred at about 7 p.m. Pacific Standard Time, and that the victims were evacuated from the scene by 9 p.m.
'We do not know the
extent of their injuries' Mr. Deyerin said.
Noel Brady, a
spokesman for the Washington State Department of Transportation, said that it was 'unclear what caused the
bridge to collapse' at the tail end of rush hour.
'We are investigating the
possibility that an oversized load truck hit the
bridge but we haven't confirmed it,' Mr. Brady said.
