报道中说，据广东省妇幼医院一项有关儿童内分泌疾病的调查显示，早熟儿童的数量在过去十年中翻了一番。

这里的"early onset of puberty"指的就是早熟，即过早进入青春期。"Onset"是"开端，发生"的意思，我们还可以说"the onset of disease"（疾病的发作）、"the onset of old age"（老年的开始）和"the onset of winter"（冬天的来临）等。
