Zongzi is a special
delicacy eaten during Dragon Boat Festival. We will now
briefly introduce to you the method to make zongzi.
The main
ingredient for zongzi is glutinuous rice. Owing to the different
additional ingredients used as filling, zongzi comes in two different flavors; one is sweet while the other is salty. If red bean paste, jujubes, raisins, etc, are added as filling, then the zongzi will taste sweet. If meat/pork, ham, peanut, shiitake mushroom, etc, are added as filling, then the zongzi will taste salty. Naturally,
whatever you like to eat can be used as filling.
There are
roughly three main steps to make zongzi. The first step is to clean the leaves for the zongzi, boil it, and leave it to air dry. Also wash the glutinous rice. The second step is to roll up two pieces of zongzi leaves from the center, forming it into the shape of a cone. Fill it with glutinous rice and the other ingredients. Then use a string to tie it into the shape of a cone. The third step is to put the zongzi into a pot and add cold water [i.e. unboiled water] until it covers over the zongzi. Boil it over high heat. Then use low heat and let it
simmer for about another ten minutes before removing it from the pot. The
delicious zongzi is ready.
