David: I would like to understand better this Chinese concept of parenting, "Tiger Mom", is it really that strict?
HS: It used to be, but nowadays more and more young parents are moving towards the western style of parenting.
LL: Right, encouragement takes center stage for this relatively equitable and liberal style of parenting.
David: So are the both of you more or less receptive of this western style of parenting?
LL: Yep, my parents gave me freedom to grow, they didn't criticize me all the time, nor did they impose restrictions on me. In the future, I intend to give my kids a liberal environment.
HS: But the western method of parenting is not entirely flawless, I favor a strict method, that's the environment I grew up in. Although Westerners find it hard to accept such strict upbringing, but I'm of the opinion that the western society may have a slight misunderstanding on the Chinese's style of parenting. Strict parenting doesn't mean we're demeaning the child, rather, it is a more effective way to guide the child towards achievement. An ancient Chinese saying goes, "The strict teacher produces a brilliant student."
David: Ah, I've heard of this before. Only when the teacher is strict can the student be outstanding and capable.
LL: That's right. But if parents are excessively strict, children will lose their creativity, they will lose the interest in their studies.
HS: That's not how I see it, if we don't enforcestrict (parental) controls and restrictions, children easily become undisciplined; children can't readily understand their shortcomings if we blindlyshower them with encouragement and praises. But with strict upbringing, children learn good habits, it can uncover a child's hidden potential.
David: But parents like "Tiger Mom", place too much expectations on their kids, there are endless "no's": no parties; no scores below A, and what not. That's pretty harsh!
LL: I quite agree with David's point of view, I think parents should be more lenient with their kids, give them some space. This way, the kids are happier too.
HS: What you guys said makes sense. But I'm still of the opinion that strict parenting is more effective, it's easier for the kid to succeed.
David: No wonder Wall Street Journal reported, "Chinese Mothers are Superior"! Apparently Tiger Mom's two daughters are "star musicians", so it isn't such a bad thing after all. So does this mean that you're gonna be a strict father?
HS: Ha ha, I have to get a girlfriend first! I'll think about this predicament after I get a girlfriend.
LL: You must get yourself a lenient girlfriend, otherwise your kids are doomed.
