All my Chinese friends call me "金针菇(needle mushroom)", for I have special interest to this kind of food, and this name also sounds fairly affectionate. You can refer from my nickname that every part of my life has something to do with food, and looking for delicious food has always been my favorite, and China happens to be the most wonderful place to develop such a hobby. Chinese restaurants are found in many places in the world. Every time I talk about Chinese food with my friends, their mouths water. You can not find a book that contains everything about Chinese food. The reason lies not only in the long history, but also the unique feature of each delicacy in every locality. Tianjin is a big city, and that's why you can taste almost all the local delicacies in China without leaving for other places. This is also the very spell that has kept me in Tianjin for six years.
Before I came to Tianjin, I have heard of its three special snacks: Goubuli Steamed Stuffed Buns, Er Duoyan Fried Cake and 18th Street Fried Dough Twists. In the first few days when I arrived in Tianjin, I had eaten all these three snacks. Maybe it was because I had expected too much from them, they didn't seem as good as I thought. However, they could be a good experience and ideal gifts for my friends.
Speaking of the three unique delicacies of Tianjin, I naturally came upon a story which tells how the Goubuli steamed stuffed bun gets its name. In the Qing Dynasty, there was a steamed bun shop whose owner was called "Gouzi" as his childhood name. His steamed stuffed buns sold so well that sometimes he was too busy to talk to his clients. Then people made fun of him by saying, "when Gouzi sells steamed stuffed buns, he neglects people." As time went by, people began to call the steamed stuffed buns sold by his family "Goubuli".
Famous as the three unique delicacies of Tianjing, the locals don't eat them often. As far as I'm concerned, Tianjin accommodates far more delicious food than these three. The following is an introduction to the other Tianjin delicacies I love most.
五大道
Tianjin Fifth Avenue
Tianjin Fifth Avenue lies in the south of downtown Tianjin, where houses of various architectural styles of Britain, France, Italy, Germany and Spain were built, which has formed a unique Exposition of Neoteric Architectures in Tianjin. It's natural for a number of restaurants with exclusive features to choose their locations there, and basically each restaurant would occupy a building. Many of their menus are passed on from generation to generation, like some private home cuisines. But as an overseas student who can never be described as rich, I have never been to such luxurious restaurants. Some private home cuisines is priced quite high, charging several hundred yuan per person on the average. I will prefer to find some places that have a romantic atmosphere and offer tasty but relatively cheaper food. The following are some of my favorite restaurants, and when you have a chance to drop at the Fifth Avenue, you can have a taste of some delicious food nearby when you feel tired from strolling.

Guiyuan Restaurant, located at No.103 Chengdu Avenue (near Guilin Road) of Heping District, mainly features the Tianjin style dishes, and the famous dishes here are diced beef with black pepper and garlic heads, cucumber mixed with mustard, baked pumpkin with yolk, and chrysanthemum-shaped eggplant. It is said that dishes here are cooked in a real Tianjing style.

The recommended dishes include special home made weever, wanwan chicken, sweet and sour pork ribs, and lion's head meatballs. The chicken soup leads to endless aftertaste, and it is strongly recommended.
Casserole Li, located at No. 46 Jiujiang Road (at the entrance of Suzhou Avenue) of Hexi District. Its famous dishes include pork chop of family Li , cooked cabbage with shrimps and straw mushrooms, cucumber strips and salad. Though the shop is named Casserole Li, the casserole dish cooked here are no better than the mutton shashlik sold by the roadside stalls because the atmosphere there is warmer and closer to the common people.
