Beijing now has 114km of urban rail lines in operation. By June 2008, the city will have more than 250km of subway lines, and the subway will carry at least 20% of all passenger traffic in Beijing.
At rush hours, passengers elbow their way through the crowd. But what's most impressive is that people try to get on the subway before passengers get out, hence huge mess at big stations.
The Beijing subway had record popularity in the year 2000, taking over 600 million passengers.
The most popular single day for the capital's subway is October 1st, the first day of the National Day Holiday, when it ferries 2.3 million people to their destinations.
