Not long ago, it was said that Kentucky Fried Chicken in China was preparing to offer deep-fried dough sticks on its breakfast menu. This rumor was quite controversial. In fact, the Chinese don't really mind varying the original dishes in foreign fast food restaurants, but they do mind the variation of directly selling Chinese food, and particularly Chinese food that is representative of Chinese culture in a foreign fast food restaurant. People can't help questioning whether the foreign fast food restaurant "wouldn't rather keep its identity".
不过,说老实话,如果肯德基真的卖油条的话,我个人是举双手赞成的;作为曾经在西方生活过一段时间的中国人,我非常理解肯德基在中国早餐问题上遇到的困境,因为我们在西方生活的时候遇到过同样的问题,那就是:西方的早餐里确实没有什么中国人能吃得习惯的东西。
Actually to tell the truth, if KFC does decide to sell deep-fried dough sticks, I personally would be an enthusiastic supporter of this decision. As a Chinese who has experienced life in the Western world, I am fully aware of the difficulties KFC has with the issue of Chinese breakfast, because we met with the same problem when we lived in the West. That is, there is really nothing in the Western breakfast dishes that really satisfies the Chinese appetite.
从中国饮食习惯的角度看,老外们在典型的西方早餐中会吃这样的一些东西:冰冷刺胃的牛奶麦片或果汁,干得剌嗓子的黄油果酱抹土司面包,油呼呼的烤肠和腊肉,淡不拉叽的煎鸡蛋,以及浓得呛人的咖啡或者红茶。总之,都是些比较顶人的东西。
Seen from the perspective of Chinese dietary custom, foreigners eat the following things for a typical Western breakfast: freezing cold milk with oatmeal, or fruit juice, all irritating to the stomach; butter and fruit jam on dry toast which is irritating to the throat; oily sausage and bacon, tasteless fried eggs and thick, choking coffee or black tea. In a word, they are all things to make people suffer.
这样的早餐偶尔吃一两次问题不大,但天天吃,中国人肯定受不了。有一次在柏林开展会,我们十几个中国人每天早晨都要在酒店的餐厅里吃西式的早餐;不到一个星期,吃早饭就变成了一项光荣而艰巨的任务;一些受不了这种洋罪的同志竟然像当年的曹操一样玩起了望梅止渴的把戏,他们不停地念叨说:"要是有碗稀饭就好了!"
It's not too much of a problem to have such a breakfast once in a while, but it is certain the Chinese couldn't stand to eat it every day. Once I was in Berlin for an exhibition, more than one dozen of us Chinese had to have Western breakfast in the hotel restaurant every morning. It had not been a week before having breakfast became an honorable, but daunting task. Some comrades, who could not stand this torture, made an effort to satisfy themselves with fancies as did Cao Cao of ancient times who played the trick of quenching his thirst by thinking of plums. They kept saying: "If only there was a bowl of porridge!"
实在不忍心再看下去了,我抽空找了一家中国超市买了瓶豆腐乳,准备给大家的早餐加点儿中国咸菜;出乎我的预料,第二天早上,这瓶豆腐乳的受欢迎程度有点像发救灾物资:在中国几个月也吃不完的一瓶豆腐乳,几分钟之内就被抢了个精光;有个爱开玩笑的同事一边用叉子往面包上抹豆腐乳,一边感叹说:"还是中国的 '黄油'对味儿啊!"
As I could no longer bear to see their sufferings, I spared some time to find a Chinese supermarket and bought a bottle of Chinese bean curd cheese, intending to add some Chinese flavor to everyone's breakfast. It was quite beyond my expectation that when the bottle of bean curd cheese was taken out the next day, it was so popular with everyone that it was devoured within a few minutes as if it were disaster relief, although normally such a bottle of bean curd cheese would last several months in China. One of my colleagues who likes to make jokes, exclaimed as he spread the bean curd cheese onto his toast: "it's still the Chinese 'butter' that becomes our meat after all!"
对于中国人来说,午餐或晚餐偶尔吃个汉堡加可乐还是可以接受的,但一大清早起来就让中国人吃这些东西确实很难有多少市场号召力;对于这一点,已经在中国经营了多年的肯德基恐怕比谁都清楚,否则他们就不会"偷偷地"在中国的早晨卖皮蛋瘦肉粥了。
To us Chinese, it's acceptable to have a hamburger and coca cola for lunch or supper every now and then, but it hardly appeals to us to eat such things early in the morning. Kentucky Fried Chicken, who has been doing business in China for many years, is more aware of this situation than anyone, otherwise they wouldn't "quietly" sell porridge with preserved eggs and lean meat in China.
不过,和卖皮蛋瘦肉粥相比,洋快餐卖油条确实有点太扎眼了,容易引起"姓中还是姓西"的争论。其实,像这种事情最好的办法是参考我们改革开放的做法,那就是:允许看但要坚决地试;只要午餐或者晚餐不卖中餐,肯德基就算早上卖点儿油条恐怕也改变不了其洋餐的本质特征,而且,这样的革新有利于中国消费者多一个早餐的选择。
However, compared with selling porridge with preserved eggs and lean meat, selling deep-fried dough sticks in foreign fast food restaurants is really too blaringly obvious, and easily arouses the argument of "Is it really Western or is it Chinese?" In fact, the best way to deal with something like this is to refer to our practice during reform and opening up, that is: allow it but stay determined: so long as Chinese food is not sold for lunch and supper, Kentucky Fried Chicken is unlikely to change its nature as a foreign food restaurant even if it sells deep-fried dough sticks for breakfast. What's more, such a renovation is beneficial to us by providing Chinese consumers one more choice for breakfast.
