A very influential thing in my life happened to me when I was nine. My parents took my five years old brother and me to Penghu. At that time, because of the change of seasons, there were huge tides in Penghu. Four of us and three uncles sat on the banana boat. My mother told the tourist guide, "There are two kids on the boat. We should be careful and make sure everything goes smoothly." However, nobody could predict. When the boat came to the middle of the ocean, a big wave turned it upside down.
Although all of us were in our swimming suits, only one uncle was able to swim. My father grasped me, and my mother held my brother. Finally my mother and my brother got onto a water scooter. Unfortunately, the water scooter was tossed by the fluctuating wave and they fell into water again. This time, my mother could not reach my brother and we watched him drift away farther and farther. For a few seconds, we felt so hopeless. Luckily, a life guard saved my brother and then my mother. Later, two water scooters came and rescued all of us. We all came ashore safely, but it was a narrow escape.
However, my brother's head and nose were hurt by the water scooter. After he came back, his nose was still bleeding and he kept shivering. My mother was really scared. During the rest of journey, none of us dared to go to water again. Long time after the trip, when heard of the banana ship and swimming, the whole family still felt frightened.
When my study kept me busier and busier, the family had fewer chances to travel together. My mother hoped that I could learn how to swim so as to save myself when the unexpected came. Fortunately, the school offered us the swimming class and I learned how to swim. Now, I was able to swim like a fish in the water.
This accident made me know that I should not be afraid of water. I had to face it to defeat my horror and myself. This experience also gave me the strength to face the failure and bear hardships. It made me more confident to meet the challenges in my life.
