前(qián)

字形：

"前"的古字由"止"、"舟"、"刀"三部分组成。"止"字是脚的象形，"刀"的两竖表示水流，整个字的意思是人在船上顺水而行，由此产生前进的意思，后又引申出"前面"的含义。 
"前(qián)" in its earliest form consisted of three parts "止(zhǐ)", "舟(zhōu)" and "刀(dāo)". "止(zhǐ)" was the shape of foot, "舟(zhōu)"" referred to boat, and the two horizontal strokes in "刀(dāo)" represented stream. So the character described a scene in which a boat was sailing down the stream. The character referred to "going forward" and later has the meaning of "in the front".
