晋代有位著名的将军名叫祖逖（zǔtì），年轻时就立志报效国家。他有一个志趣相投的好朋友，名叫刘琨（liúkūn），两个人同吃同住，读书练剑，非常勤奋努力。一天，祖逖在睡梦中被公鸡的打鸣声吵醒，怎么都睡不着，于是就把刘琨叫醒了，对他说："都说半夜听见鸡叫不吉利，我却不这么想，干脆我们以后每天听见鸡叫就起床练剑，怎么样？"刘琨同意了。于是，他们每天都在听到鸡叫后起床练剑，一年四季，不管是冬天还是夏天，从不间断。最后，他们都成为了栋梁之材，被委以重任，实现了报效国家的理想。
In the Jin Dynasty, there was a famous general named Zu Ti, who was determined to render service to his country when he was a young man. He lived with a good friend, Liu Kun. Every day, they read books and practiced sword skills together with great assiduity. One night, Zu Ti was waked by the crowing of roosters. Feeling himself unable to fall asleep again, he then wakened Liu Kun and said to him: "the crow of roosters is said to be inauspicious, but Idon't think so. Why don't we practice our swordsmanship when the roosters start to crow?" Liu Kun agreed. From then on, they rose up uponhearing the crow to practice fencing every morning without interruption, whether it was winter or summer. In the end, both of them became men of great ability and were entrusted with important affairs and realized their dream of serving the country.
