北宋时期著名文学家、政治家范仲淹，非常憎恨官场存在的腐败现象，他担任参政时，查考地方官吏政绩，将那些不称职的官吏名字用笔全都勾掉，这些人就因此失业了。大臣富弼去劝说他，不要就这样断送了别人的前程，范仲淹说："他哭比百姓哭要好吧！"
Fan Zhongyan, a well-knownscholar and politician from the Northern Song Dynasty, resented corruption in the court. When in office, he crossed out the names of incompetent local officials when examining their work performance, in turn making these people lose their jobs. Another minister named Fu Bi went to persuade him not to ruin others' futures. Fan Zhongyan said, "That he is crying is much better than common people crying!"
