小明上完厕所，回到教室跟老师说："厕所有好多蚂蚁。"
老师想到蚂蚁的英文"ant"这个单词，于是考小明："蚂蚁怎么说？"
小明一脸茫然，想了一下说，"蚂蚁他......什么也没说......"
After Xiaoming returned from the toilet, he said to the teacher, "There are many蚂蚁(máyǐ,ants) in the toilet."
The teacher wanted to test him about the word and said:" 蚂蚁怎么说(How to say蚂蚁 in English)?"
Xiaoming felt puzzled. He thought for a while and said:" The ants...they said nothing..."

 The Usage of "怎么(zěnme)"
"怎么"一般有以下几种用法：
There are a few usages regarding the word "怎么(zěnme)".
1. 相当于英语中的how，用在疑问句或反问句中，询问情状、性质、方式、原因、行动等。（这个故事中，老师本来想问 "How to say 蚂蚁 in English?"，小明理解成了"How/what did the ant say?"）例如：
It means "how" in English, and is often used in interrogative sentences or rhetorical questions, for asking about the situation, nature, method, reason and action, etc. (In this story, the teacher wanted to ask "How to say 蚂蚁 in English?" But Xiaoming misunderstood it as " How/What did the ants say?") For example,
他们怎么还不回来？
How come they have not returned yet?
我怎么知道你不喜欢吃牛肉呢？
How could I know that you don't like beef?

2. 用于虚指，相当于英语中的what或者why。
It could also be used for vague indication, which is equivalent to "what" or "why" in English.
例如：不知怎么，她很气恼。
For example:
She is really upset without an obvious reason.

3. 相当于英语中的however 或者 no matter how, 前面常用"不论"、"不管"等词，其后常用"都""也"等词相照应。
It equals to "however" or "no matter how" in English, usually following "不论", "不管" and before the words as "都" or "也", etc.
例如：他怎么也不肯休息。
For example,
No matter what, he would not take a rest.

4. 相当于英语中的somewhat，表示某些程度。
It means "somewhat" in English, to show a degree.
例如：也许它留给你的印象仍然不怎么深。
For example,
It maybe still failed to leave you a somewhat deep impression.

5. 相当于英语中的how could，用于反问或感叹，表示肯定、否定或加强语气。
It means "how could" in English, which is normally seen in rhetorical questions or exclamatory sentences, to show a tone of affirmation, negation or emphasizing.
例如：怎么，你不认得我了？
